Reusing and Recycling Project

After reading about the conservation of resources (e.g. paper, fossil fuels, water) in our Science textbook, the students set out to create a Reusing and Recycling box. The aim of the box is to encourage reusing or recycling of items they throw away everyday.

Example of ways to reuse
• Use coffee mugs instead of paper cups.
• Use cloth napkins or towels.
• Refilling bottles.
• Donating old magazines or surplus equipment.
• Reusing boxes.
• Turning empty jars into containers for leftover food.
• Purchasing refillable pens and pencils.

Benefits of Recycling
• Creates less pollution.
• Saves energy and the cutting down of trees.
• Reduces the use of oil and other fossil fuels.
• Creates jobs.
• Reduces the need for new landfills and incinerators.

Resources

Here we see the students creating something new out of used household items. Reusing household items such as paper products, glass bottles and rechargeable batteries is a very important way of minimizing the waste that a household sends to landfill. By using an item over and over again you prevent having to buy new materials, saving the Earths natural resources.

Reusing waste is given a higher priority in the waste hierarchy as there is far less energy requirements than there would be if this waste was to be recycled.
